TomeNET localization? (translation)

Post by tangar »

I wonder - is it possible to translate TomeNET to another language? How this process could be done? I tried to replace text in "\lib\game" to Russian language but it show empty space when I check it in-game (need to chance encoding?).

Currently there are quite big Russian-speaking community and we would be glad to translate TomeNET to Russian if there is such possiblity. I could organize process of translation (via cs-platform https://crowdin.com/ ), but to do so I need to understand how it works first :)

AFAIU there are a lot of stuff coming from server, which means that it would be much harder to translate it then just simple .txt files - to do so there should be somekind of localization-engine... or maybe (I hope so) I mistaken?

Please help to understand how does it work and is it possible at all?

[speculate on  ]
in some twisted way, you can try to make another tileset but with russian characters…
and then translate using glyphs for that tileset… remembering that you will broke ingame chat and other messeges…
and that you don't use "proper russian" characters, just english one, so you must map translation… probably using some sort of nice script.
[speculate off]

yes you can just translate files in lib/game and this is fine if you have latin alphabet and you kick out diacritics…

damm it's even more complex when I imagined at first... Russian language got non-latin alphabet - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_alphabet

So what we have to do at least:
1) to make tileset with Russian glyphs // we could do so.
Аа Бб Вв Гг Дд Ее Ёё Жж Зз Ии Йй
Кк Лл Мм Нн Оо Пп Рр Сс Тт Уу Фф
Хх Цц Чч Шш Щщ Ъъ Ыы Ьь Ээ Юю Яя

2) Then remap everything to this symbols // no idea how to do so. anyone could help?

3) Then translate stuff... // we could do so

But.. there is already Angband in Russian:
https://yadi.sk/public?hash=%2Fy3%2FfVJ ... 1JqnBAg%3D
So it's not impossile :D Maybe we would be able to take some stuff from Angband translation to TomeNET? At least to understand main principle...

Hm.. and what about information which comes directly from server (text strings)? Is this problem exist?

There was a korean server at some point, done by a korean player going by the handle "potato" ^^.
They created a patch for Tomenet that allowed input of korean language, but I don't know details about it, which encoding, if english was possible at the same time or not, sorry.
I think it was on nethack.byus.net somewhere.

I didn't manage to register at nethack.byus.net. I almost made it (ave google translate!), but stuck at capcha - you need to fill numbers and they are nowhere to be seen :(

Any chance that someone got this patch source code, so it would be possible to create Russian analogue? There are a lot of people who are quite hyped about perspercive to play TomeNET in Russian. Russian community would surely run it's own server, so you don't need to be worry about problems with russian language in chat :)

actual translation words from En to Ru is not a problem.. the problem is to develop a way to assign such possibility. AFAIU to be able to do so - you need not only translate stuff on client side, but also have russian (or other language) on server side; as it sends stuff which client accepts as it is. I might be mistaken though... but if not - to be able to translate the game - you have to create your own server.

I think, client translation can be done without server translation. Cause, you know all types of server messages (in english), so it is possible translate the server messages in client, using some search/replace techniques.

Just thinking aloud...

Good idea! But to do so we need to develop translation module which is not an easy task
