[idea] monk class

Post by tangar »

Main idea - to create melee fighter who could often use skills. Magic-users has to cast a lot of stuff manually, but there aren't physical fighters who could do the same with fighting skills - most of the time they are just auto-retaliate and using fighting techniques quite rarely... Monk could be different.

Monk - melee fighter which focusing at using staffs* - weapons like 2-handed quarterstaff. Monk gameplay is based at active attacks. When you play you have to use skills (combat techniques) a lot :)

- raw damage (if you attack with normal attacks) - much weaker then warriors or rogues. main source of damage - skills
- can't wear heavy armour
- has a bonus defence from staffs (now its ~15 defence at quarterstaff, monk could get 2x or 3x)
- could perform warrior and rogue fighting techniques
- has 20 (or more - based at "resilience") stamina (not 10 like others) - could use skills more often
- stamina regens much faster then at other classes
- sprint cost 1 stamina (so monk could fly around with it a lot)
- main class skill "Resilience": has some perks from martial arts, grants bonus to stamina amount and stamina regeneration

* Why staffs? It would be easier to balance class if it would have special weapon type :) But if balance is not a problem, it could be all 2-h weapons.

Please make your suggestions and ideas, lets polish this concept :)

Someone mentioned it at Monk Class. If this is implemented, I strongly suggest reading its original appearances in original (1970s) Dungeons & Dragons supplement 2: Blackmoor, and Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (1st ed.) Players Handbook. Basic Dungeons & Dragons (‘BECMI’ rules books) later also had a Mystic class which was the basic D&D version of the same, but both are a bit different and both could be used. Actually, it's said basic/original D&D through AD&D 2nd ed. are all compatible enough to use earlier version material just with minor numerical changes (mainly armour class) and this is how many people actually played those games. One could even play either a regular D&D or AD&D elf in AD&D, to have slightly different sorts of elves (one advancing best for fighting, and another advancing best for magic.) I'd like to see TomeNET reflect that compatibility, also, if people can do the research for that.

Main idea of monk in my vision - create char who would be able to spend stamina and do a lot of different battle moves. Currently playing melee char in TomeNET is quite passive and it would be fun to have new, stamina-based-skills mechanics.
