Private server?

Post by WizardRiley »

Is there a way to create your own servers? I'd like to be able to use my own server with a few select friends

Well, I've written a guide on how to set up a TomeNET server, but it's pretty outdated. That guide is here: http://koti.mbnet.fi/mikaelh/tomenet/howto-server.php

Especially the installation instructions for Windows are outdated. The latest TomeNET server for Windows is here: http://koti.mbnet.fi/mikaelh/tomenet/do ... server.zip

The Windows build of the server has some issues. FIrst, it can't connect to the metaserver, which probably isn't a problem for you. Secondly, it tries to create temporary files to the root of the drive, which can cause problems especially with Vista or 7.

Running a server on Linux is usually easier. What you need then is the latest tarball of the source code: http://koti.mbnet.fi/mikaelh/tomenet/do ... 4b.tar.bz2

Oh curses, I have vista, hopefully i can figure out some solution to the problem.
Edit: I know that I need to port forward, I've seen it somewhere, but now I can't find it again
Another Edit: Okay, found it out, but now I don't know what to tell my friend to connect to, unless it's my IP
Edit of an Edit: Okay, so The client was able to find the server, but it says either the server or client is out of date

This site tells you what IP you connected from: http://whatismyipaddress.com/
That's the IP you should tell your friends to connect to.

Ahh, alright. Now I just need a client that's as old as the server, or unless you know how I fix the "cant connect, please get the latest client / server at (link)"
Edit: I actually get a "unknown client version"

My site has clients going back to version 4.4.1e. The list of files is here: http://koti.mbnet.fi/mikaelh/tomenet/downloads/

Version 4.4.4c is coming out soon and it will fix the temporary file issue so you could also wait for that.

Is there a way to have an account that isn't admin? I'd like to be able to play with my friends without being godlike.

Just create a new account. Only the first account created on a server will be an admin by default.
