I played rogue last time and it was ok for me to go in "shadow" to check monster. But now I afraid to go any other char at high-lvl - I have no idea how I could survive there - if I have no idea what monster I about to meet. Its really hard to recognized different monsters, for example D's. Also you could try to recognize some ~ (list at Mikaelh website). I do not see any difference there between Barracuda, Whale, Sky whale and krakens

Image Guess who?

If there would be somekind of guide or just a list of different high-lvl monsters with their colors and the most important - list of flickering patterns - it would help a lot.

Please help!

This is a big problem in TomeNET -- monsters are not uniques like for example in Angband. Even for experienced players, it's hard to tell the difference between say Itangast and Glaurung, or a plain chaos beastman from The Norsa.

Guess who...?

And in the latest version you cannot look at something unless you're in LOS of said something. Easy when you have Legendary stealth or if you're a rogue... impossible if you're something more "noisy". Some monsters have special attacks that will reveal them: for example, if you see a black D disintegrating walls, you will immediately recognize Ancalagon from a plain ancient black dragon. But from others, you will only find out what it is when it's too late. So the only thing to do is check the monster spoiler and guess... if you don't want to take any risk (you see flashy H for example), simply avoid the fight. You can win the game without killing everything you see.

Mikaelh said there is different colorful flickering patterns. So if you learn them - it would be possible to ID monster. Problem is - to learn this flickering patterns - we need list of this types of flickering. Something like:

1) red-grey-blue flickering. Its called R-flickering. It used by some *-monsters, for example, Jumping fireball of Perplexity. Example of flickering: Image
2) grey-jumping flickering. its called G-flickering. Its used by some t-monsters, for example, Monk of Drunkness. Example of flickering:Image

This example of course just for a jokes, but... Anyone knows some patterns? Please post all you know, lets start collecting them %)

Free program to record flickering of monster to a gif:
https://screentogif.codeplex.com/

Smallest size of recording is 202x38. Test:

btw - what is what there? %)

But you could then cut what you recorded (top menu -> image -> crop) to any size:

To upload pictures best place is https://picasaweb.google.com - you could upload pictures there with drag-n-drop to browser (no need to install anything). No adverts there :) Then just RMC at picture and copy its url 8-)

Lets start hunt!

Actually I get used to flickering patterns. After a while you would start to understand them. I didn't understand/remember everything of course, but made quite big progress. May be I'll make a guide "how to read" them :)

But still it would be nice to have some monsters more distinguishable ("p" especially) :) May be add some more different flickering patterns?
