BadValue, can't create window in ubuntu

I messed with this for a while before finding a simple solution, so I thought I'd post for reference:

4.4.9c started working fine, until I changed some of the in game options, making it crash and saying this when trying to restart:

BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 1 (X_CreateWindow)

Tried rebooting, using different versions, recompiling and all kinds of cargo cult troubleshooting. It turned out, all that was needed was to delete the file .tomenetrc in /home/user/.
